¡¡ Chung Shifa, Shanghai Art Master, Dead at 86
Cheng Shifa, famous traditional artist,
died Tuesday evening in Shanghai Huadong Hospital at the age of 86. Cheng's medium of choice was oil, and one of his favorite subjects was New Year's pictures. He was also a master calligrapher. Cheng focused his life on traditional art forms, university teaching, book writing and was President of the Chinese Painting Institute of Shanghai. He once said, "Art must reflect reality, whether it is oil or ink-wash painting. Otherwise, it is dead." But Cheng was also known for acumen as a comics artist, and in spite of his dedication to more traditional forms, he never abandoned the comic rendition as an art form.
